The 1861 Keeping Porter stems from the 1861 Running Porter that Orbit brewed together with Anspach & Hobday back in the spring of 2022. This is based on a 19th century recipe from the Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, which we've adapted and modified. The black malt brings lots of burnt toast, overly roasted coffee flavours, and an assertive acidity. We have started using a little chocolate malt to try and reduce those acrid, burnt flavours, and some crystal malt to bring sweetness to balance the acidity. The resulting beer is dark, dark black. It has an oily texture, loads of rich dried fruit and alcohol warmth, often with hints of leather, tar, smoke and chocolate, and then a herbal hop bitterness on top

We wanted to create a more palateful, stronger beer, but without spices. We needed a mixture of five different barley malts for the dark ruby colour and the body that we wanted. Then we wanted hops that were not too strong to contribute to the roundness of winter beers. This is why we opted for the Slovenian Styrian Golding, not very bitter, but used in great quantity and combined with a little Cascade, for a very fine hopping

Its colour is copper, with appetizing red highlights. Its aroma immediately presents a nice balance between malt and hops. It has a beautiful bitterness that lingers in the mouth, with a dry and light finish
